Yes. DTF transfers work on polyester garments and hoodies — DTF ink bonds to both natural and synthetic fabrics, including 100% polyester shirts and polyester-cotton blend hoodies. That's one of the main reasons DTF has become the go-to method for custom sportswear, work uniforms, and printed hoodies.
How DTF bonds to polyester fabric
DTF (direct-to-film) printing lays your full-colour design onto a special film with an adhesive powder layer. When you press it — 300–320°F (150–160°C) for 10–15 seconds with firm, even pressure — the adhesive melts into the fabric fibres and locks the ink in place. Unlike sublimation, which only works on high-polyester garments and can't print white ink, DTF works on any colour of polyester and prints white ink, so your design stays bright and opaque on black hoodies and dark jerseys alike.
The same press settings that work on cotton work on polyester. The key difference is heat sensitivity: some performance polyester fabrics (especially thin or coated ones) can scorch or show a press-box shine at the top of the range, so many printers press at the lower end, around 300°F, and check a test print first.
Hoodies, sweatshirts and fleece: what to watch for
Most hoodies are a polyester-cotton blend (like a 50/50 or 60/40) or 100% cotton fleece — both are DTF-friendly. Two things matter more than the fabric blend:
- Surface texture: Loose, heavy fleece nap can make small text or fine lines look fuzzy. Bold, clean artwork prints best on thick hoodies.
- Thickness: A bulky hoodie absorbs more heat than a tee. Make sure your press applies firm, even pressure across the whole design — uneven pressure is the number one cause of prints that lift at the edges after a few washes.
Press pockets, drawstrings and seams out of the way (or use a pressing pillow) so the platen sits flat on the transfer area.
Peel and pressing tips for polyester
Follow your film's peel instructions — some DTF films are hot peel, others are cold or warm peel. Peeling a cold-peel film while hot can pull the design off the fabric. For polyester:
- Press at 300–320°F for 10–15 seconds with firm, even pressure.
- Peel according to your film type (hot, warm, or cold).
- Do a short second press of 5–10 seconds with a cover sheet (often called a re-press or seal press) — this flattens the hand-feel and improves wash durability.
- Wait at least 24 hours before the first wash, then wash inside-out in cold water, hang dry or tumble low, and skip the bleach.
Cared for this way, DTF prints on polyester and hoodies hold up through dozens of wash cycles without cracking or fading.
Can you press DTF on 100% polyester performance shirts?
Yes — gym shirts, jerseys, and dri-fit style polyester tees take DTF well. Two cautions: press at the lower end of the range (around 300°F) to avoid heat marks on thin athletic fabric, and keep designs to a reasonable size on stretchy fabrics — oversized solid prints on very stretchy polyester can crack over time where the fabric flexes, which is true of every print method, not just DTF.
FAQ
Does DTF work on 100% polyester?
Yes. DTF bonds to 100% polyester, polyester blends, cotton, and nylon. It also prints white ink, so designs look crisp on dark polyester garments.
Will DTF transfers melt polyester fabric?
At the correct range of 300–320°F for 10–15 seconds, polyester won't melt. If your fabric is thin or heat-sensitive, press at 300°F and test on a scrap area first.
Is DTF better than vinyl on hoodies?
For full-colour logos and detailed designs, yes — DTF prints unlimited colours in one press, feels thinner and softer than layered vinyl, and costs less per shirt on multi-colour designs.
Can I use a home iron instead of a heat press?
A proper heat press is strongly recommended. A home iron can't deliver the firm, even pressure and consistent temperature a DTF transfer needs, so results on polyester and hoodies are usually poor and short-lived.
